Railway Inn Open Ladies Doubles

10/09/2017
This fun and friendly competition day started on a warm and sunny September morning.

A very ‘league’ friendly 12 Ladies teams turned out from The Railway, Hartley, Bat n Ball, Lordswood/London and Istead Rise.

The format for the morning was 3 leagues of four with the top two from each league and the next best two, going through to the main, with the rest into the plate.
As always, the music played all day and the guys were at our beck and call with Dean ‘chief’ measurer – I’m sure most of us ladies just called him over so we could see him on his knees! Sadly the clouds eventually came over and we had a downpour but fortunately most of the morning games had finished and the teams were having lunch in the bar at the time!

The afternoon games were also played in leagues which were seeded from the mornings’ results. The winners of the two MAIN leagues were The Sisters, (Railways Janice Keemer-Richards & Christine Clacey) and Bat n Balls (Becky & Carolyn Edwins), who played the final in torrential rain with Bat n Ball the deserved winners. The Plate competition was won by the Lime Tarts (Hartley’s Jean Oddy & Hilda Griffiths).

Money prizes went to the top 4 teams of the Main and to the Winners of the Plate. As always EVERY player went home with a gift and a great day was had by all.
Many thanks to Ray Keemer-Richards for cooking the bacon butties, Steve Golder for the music & helping me with the setting up/clearing up, Dean Ashby for running the competition and being chief measurer, Jack Milner for Photographs/Publicity.

Results:
Winner of Main: Bat n Ball (Becky & Carolyn Edwins)
Runners-Up: Railway (Janice Keemer-Richards & Christine Clacey )
3rd place: Railway (Fay Golder & Tanya Ashby
4th Place: Hartley (Lois Adams & Brigitte Snow)

Winners of Plate: Hartley (Jean Oddy & Hilda Griffiths)

KPA Shooting 2017

19/05/2017
Twelve adults and one Junior (Jason White) entered the KPA’s Shooting Competition which was hosted by the Railway Inn.

Rain was expected, which I’m sure kept some people away, however it stayed fair but cold.

Jason was the last to throw and at that point we had four players sitting in fourth place, all on 16 points. Jason however scored 18 to take the fourth spot so we didn’t have to revert to the countback system.

The four finalists were all Railway members: Scott Ashby, Neil Phillips, Steve Brown and Jason White.
Scott went into the final by beating Steve. Jason and Neil both scored 20 but Jason went through to the final on countback.

Jason went on the beat Scott comfortably in the final, so our KPA Shooting Champion is Jason White!
A massive well done to Jason who is proving to be a great all round player.

Many thanks to all our helpers - I think that includes everyone at some point in the evening!

ROB COOTER TRIPLES REPORT

19/03/2017
The eighth annual competition in memory of Robert Cooter was held at the Star Meadow Sports Club on Sunday 19th March. 78 players attended travelling from afar afield as Wales.

After the morning leagues 16 teams progressed to the main competition with the remainder in the plate. Winners of the main competition were the home trio of Kevin Spillett, Dave Hurren and Dave Lavelle. In a surprisingly one-sided final they bettered Rowland Jones, Nic Baxter and Phil Bradshaw. Losing semi-finalists were two teams from the Railway Inn, consisting of Robert's good friends Scott and Dean Ashby, playing with Jason White along with Duncan Brown, Debs & Mike Capelin.

The Plate competition was won by Mat Lomas, Andy Dunstall and Chris Perry (Tovil). Runners up were Steven Slade, Sylvie & Martin Pry who had travelled up from East Sussex.

However the real winners on the day was Robert's charity fund, the Little Buds Fund - supporting the Special Baby Care unit at Darent Valley Hospital, who benefitted to the tune of £752 from entry fees, raffle proceeds and generous donations. This brings the total raised to date to over £8,300.

Corinne and Mark would like to extend a big "THANK YOU" to everyone that attended, donated raffle prizes, bought raffle tickets and made donations and as always a big thanks to Richard Spillett who helped prepare the terrain and for running the raffle.

GRFC Open Doubles

12/03/2017
The weather, although not blest with sunshine, was kind to the organisers and players, a record 28 teams, who turned out for this first open petanque competition in Kent, on Sunday 12 March.

Teams from Wales, Sussex, Surrey, London and across the county, from Dover, Maidstone, Medway Towns, Hartey and other parts more local.

A full day’s play with seven leagues of four in the morning, with the results from these determining the order of play for the afternoon. Top eight teams going into two gold leagues, next eight into two silver leagues and the remainder into two consolage leagues

The winners from the leagues played off in a final for each section of the competition. Cash prizes went to the runners up in the gold leagues, the overall winner and losing finalists in bothe gold and silver leagues and the winner of the consolage competition.

A total of £260 was shared between seven teams. Winners of the consolage were “Hanging”, Dean Ashby and Alex Spillet, losing finalist Bat and Ball, Tim and Becky Edwins.
The silver competition was won by Mick and Joyce Nash, “Hartley Shore”, who triumphed over “E Depot”, Michelle and Alan Cregeen.

The gold leagues saw the last of the league games not finishing until just after 18.00 with the light fading, and the winner of this game was to determine who would be the last team going through to the final, this turned out to be “Meadow” Richard Spillet and Matt Horrigan.

As the sky darkened and the drizzle started to fall harder, it was decided that the teams could play a shortened final or share the proceeds between the four players. In the end, the two teams, “Ponies”, Dave Hurren and Roland along with Meadow, would share the winners and runners up pot between them as Joint winners.

GRFC Petanque section who organised the day, raised funds to go towards the installation of a roof over a large section of the pistes at Gravesend, which will be the first covered petanque venue in the county.

Ponies (Rowland & Matt) won gold 1 with No Hope (Corine & Trevor) 2nd.
Meadow (Dave & Rich) won gold 2 with Luke & Paul 2nd.

Silver was won by Hartley Shore (Mick & Joyce), runners up were E Depot (Alan & Michelle).

Consolage was won by Hanging (Dean & Alex), runners up were Bat & Ball (Becky & Tim).
