Report

Lee Jamieson

03/01/2019
It is with the greatest sadness that I have to report that one of the log standing members of our sport, Lee Jamieson, has passed away unexpectedly.

Lee had been a major force for many years, playing in countless competitions around the county, country and beyond, frequently with his wife, Angie and son Ashley.

He had played in and for Kent for a number of years.

Our thoughts are with the whole family at this sad time.

Steve Wilkinson – Duke of Wellington PC

05/12/2018
The Club is deeply saddened to report the passing of our geordie friend Steve Wilkinson on 31st October, aged 79.

Over his years at the Duke, Steve played in every division of the KPL from 7 to 2 and, in his last full season, was a proud member of the Campaigners team that won promotion to Division 1 for the first time.

He was an unmistakable figure on the piste, standing foursquare on to the target, feet spread wide apart, flat cap pulled low over his brow – his technique owed little to the coaching manual but he was a fine pointer.

Always ready with sound advice, a comforting arm over the shoulder, or a kind word, Steve was a genuine good guy. He will be sadly missed.

Steve’s funeral will be held at Blue Bell Hill Crematorium, ME5 9QU, at 11-30am on 20th December, after which friends will gather at the Duke to remember him.

League Handicap

01/10/2018
Dear captains and secretaries, please inform your team and club members of the following:

Some people think it’s all over.

Well there are only 3 more Wednesdays of petanque left in the season BUT there is still the Kent League Handicapped Competition to look forward to.

This is a triples competition to be held at Hartley Country Club on 7th October 2018. Registration from 9.15 until 9.45. Play starts at 10am.
Teams can consist of 3 players from the same division, or from different divisions. Handicaps will be calculated accordingly.

The prize fund will consist of the entry money collected, together with an extra £150 from the league funds.

Generally the prizes are spread over at least 7 teams, and with the afternoon competition including a main, plate and consolage there are chances for everyone to win.
Cash prizes are paid directly to your club and individual wine prizes to yourselves.

A BBQ will be provided for breakfast and lunch and of course the club bar will be open from 12 noon.

I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Secretary of the Kent Petanque League

Peter Mapstone - Sydney Arms

03/09/2018
It is with sadness that I report the passing on the 7th of August, aged 76, of the Sydney Arms Petanque Club’s good and faithful friend Peter Mapstone.

Always having been a keen sportsman in his later life Peter really enjoyed getting fully involved in playing petanque and hardly ever missed a game. He was not a man to voice his opinion unless invited to do so, when he did, though, his insight was often incisive.

At the club we recalled that he didn’t arrive so much as just appear. In the same quiet way he left this sphere not wishing to cause a stir or be of any trouble. He truly had a gentle spirit, with a gentle yet acute humour, never pushy, always deferring to others. In short he was a true gentleman and will be keenly missed by all who had the pleasure and privilege of getting to know him.

Peter’s memorial service will be held at Eltham College Chapel at 2.15 on the 14th of September, followed at 3.30 by a wake at Foxbury, Foxbury Avenue off Perry Street, Chislehurst.

DEL COUVRET, ISTEAD RISE PC

01/08/2018
Istead Rise PC on the 18th July lost one of our most stalwart, long time members after losing his fight to cancer. Del Couvret was a member of our Club for 13 years, he was an excellent player(a ‘dark horse’ really - just when you thought you were winning.....). He would turn up dressed in our club shirt, jacket and polished shoes Although his shoes were a bit dusty when play finished!! He had a great sense of humour and a wonderful smile and no task was too much if you asked him. He worked hard with other members when we had to build our present piste even though he was probably the oldest member at that point!! He was also our Bar-bar-Q Man at our competitions. We will all miss him dearly.

Our sympathies go to his family and friends.

The funeral is 16th August, 11.30am at Eltham Crematorium.

FIRST JUNIOR PRACTICE DAY

24/02/2018
"Saturday 24th February saw the first of the Junior Practice Days at The Railway Inn, Sole Street, Meopham.  Five of our juniors attended from Hartley, Vigo and Seal, and played a couple of matches, first on their own against each other, and then another with their respective parent or grandparent.  It was lovely to see them all getting on so well and demonstrating a good standard of play.  A few adults were on hand to give encouragement and advice, and small tips from the club coach, who was also in attendance.

On speaking with the juniors and parents afterwards, it seems that some juniors have football practice on Saturday mornings and are having to make the choice of which one to attend.  Bearing that in mind, our next session on the 31st March will be at 2pm.

Thank you to all those who attended and look forward to seeing you next time.  Thank you also to Jack Milner who took photographs of the juniors in action and to the parents/grandparents for allowing us to use them to put on the site.  Hopefully, this will encourage more juniors to join us.

KPA CALENDAR 2018

05/02/2018
Calendar

This is currently the KPA calendar for 2018 as at January 29. It is a work in progress with hopefully a few more events to add to some blank Sundays. Many thanks to clubs who have offered to host and organise events this year.

Please note the National Titles weekend is being held at Gravesend Rugby Club May 26-28which will be a wonderful opportunity to play with or watch the very best players. GRFC is also hosting a Triples event on June 10 after the Londonaise on June 9. This is likely to be limited to a number of teams and pre entry.

If you would like to play in the Regional Qualifiers this year but do not have a triple please email Scott Ashby ( Scottashby03@googlemail.com) and he will try his best to get you into a team.

Best wishes for a successful season.

Gravesend RFC Petanque - AUTUMN DOUBLES

05/11/2017
With the beginning of winter just around the corner, the first Sunday in November saw the last competition of the season to be held at GRFC’s Rectory Field complex.
Some twenty-six teams turned up for registration, which included teams from as far afield as Hastings, Portsmouth, Oxshott, Anglia, Hanbury, Cranbrook, Whitstable, London and of course local clubs from Kent which included Meadow, The Railway, Lordswood, New Ash Green, and Tovil, which tipped the balance to the visiting players.

Five leagues of four and one of six teams in the morning in timed 45 minutes games saw the top eight teams going forward into the “Gold” competition in the afternoon in two leagues of four, with the winners of each playing off in the final.

Next eight teams were seeded into the “Silver” competition two leagues of four, again the winners playing a final, the remaining ten teams went into the consolage, again two leagues with the winners of each playing the final

The tight morning rounds led to quite a mix of teams going through on the points difference, but good competition was promised for the afternoon, and we weren’t disappointed.

Gold 1 was decided when Meadow 1 beat Oxshott 13-11 as they had both won two games and their opposition was decided between Railway and Lordswood who had both won two games, before Lordswood Walked through as 13-0 winners to meet Meadow (Mark Cooter and Richard Spillet) in the final.

In the final, Lordswood NAG (Chris Watkins and Geoff Booth) stamped their authority on the game early on and came away with the top prize, £80, winning 13-6, the losing finalists won £40. League runners-up won £20 each.

In the silver competition two teams stood out in their leagues with three wins each and it was “Old Boys” (Kevin Spillet and Barry Wing) who played the “Dragons” (Debbie and Mick Caplin) in the final, with the former running out convincing 13-0 winners for the silver prize, £26 with the losing finalist £16.

The consolage Saw the “Piste Heads” (Stephen Slade and Lyn Carey) Sussex, playing “The Roosters” Ray Keemer-Richards and Luke Ashford, who squeezed through with two wins but had a better points difference, the outcome of this was the latter winning £16 in a close game for the spoils, the losers taking a £10 note home with them.

Timed games for the leagues worked well with very few games not finishing within the allotted time. The finals were untimed, but still finished well within he anticipated day’s schedule, after lunch a couple of trays of mince pies were on offer to the players that had endured the cold but bright days play.

Tom Bruce - Cystic Fibrosis Fund Raising

21/09/2017
Tom Bruce

Tom played for Northwood until last year, Below is a message we've received from him and it would be good if a few people could make a contribution to the cause which is obviously very close to him and his family

I was wondering actually if the league might be able to assist in some fundraising efforts?
As you may or may not know, my eldest son Liam has Cystic Fibrosis, and I've decided to do my bit for his charity - the cystic fibrosis trust.
Me and 10 others are doing a Tough Mudder on Sunday 24th Sept. Between us with all pledges/actual donations to date, we've raised around £2000, but I'm looking for even more!

KPA 2017 Over 50’s Doubles 20th August

23/08/2017
21 teams were in attendance for this increasingly popular competition since its introduction two years ago. Scheduled to be held at GRFC but moved to Hartley due to long awaited work being undertaken to begin the installation of the covered area at the Gravesend venue.

Morning leagues determined who would be in the running for this year’s coveted title with eight teams going through into the main competition. This resulted in a final between Keith Atkinson and Richard Wenban against Dave Snook and Dave Turner with the two Dave’s emerging as the 2017 champions. Both teams will represent the Kent Region in the Champion of Champions Over 50’s Doubles national competition at Hanbury PC in September.

Congratulations also go to the main semi-finalists Margaret and David Baxter and Diane and Peter Bryant.

Also in the money were ‘Main Plate’ winners Irene and Colin Gibbs and runners-up Joyce and Mick Nash, ‘Plate Plate’ winners Ilene and John Fowers and runners-up Corrine and Mark Cooter and ‘Plate Plate Plate’ winners Debs and Mike Capelin and runners-up Ruth and Duncan ‘Mucker’ Brown.

My sincere thanks to Hartley PC for hosting the competition at very short notice, Lynn and John Lucas for running a fantastic BBQ all day and finally to Annette and Martin Eggleton for their time and expertise in running a most successful competition.

KPA Shooting Competition

19/05/2017
Twelve adults and one Junior (Jason White) entered the KPA’s Shooting Competition which was hosted by the Railway Inn.

Rain was expected, which I’m sure kept some people away, however, it stayed fair but cold.
Jason was the last to throw and at that point, we had four players sitting in fourth place, all on 16 points. Jason, however, scored 18 to take the fourth spot so we didn’t have to revert to the countback system.

The four finalists were all Railway members: Scott Ashby, Neil Phillips, Steve Brown and Jason White.

Scott went into the final by beating Steve. Jason and Neil both scored 20 but Jason went through to the final on countback.
Jason went on the beat Scott comfortably in the final, so our KPA Shooting Champion is Jason White!

A massive well done to Jason who is proving to be a great all round player.
Many thanks to all our helpers - I think that includes everyone at some point in the evening!

EPA National Youth Squad Coaching & Selection

15/02/2017
EPA National Youth Squad Coaching & Selection Programme.

In a move to make coaching more accessible to juniors we are holding coaching sessions in three locations
Southern Counties Region (venue TBC)
Burwell, Ex Serviceman's club, Cambridgshire, postcode CB25 0DU
Mansfield PC, Titchfield Park, Nottingham Road, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire postcode NG18 1BP.
We are hoping that this will mean less travelling time for many and will encourage more juniors to attend. The
event in Mansfield will only run if there are enough entries to make it viable so if you intend to enter that
session please also state on your entry your second choice venue. This event will not be a direct part of the
selection process and is open to all juniors; however coaches may observe and make notes to inform the
selection team. All juniors are encouraged to enter the coaching day regardless of age or experience - it is a
good opportunity to brush up on your skills prior to the selection day.

Above is a link to a very short survey on the new KPA website about participation. If you could all spread the word and encourage all of your club members to complete the survey, the KPA would be very grateful. We are aiming to gather feedback, increase participation and listen to ideas from our members about what they like or dislike about playing pétanque, especially in Sunday tournaments. Many thanks for your help!

Rules Change

01/01/2017
Dear KPA Member,
Firstly, may I take this opportunity to wish you and your club a happy and prosperous new year for 2017.

As you may or may not know, the international governing body of pétanque, Fédération Internationale de Pétanque et Jeu Provençal (FIPJP), recently held a meeting of congress and have approved the new rules of the sport. The new rules are attached to this post, and can also be found on the English Pétanque Association website. All the changes and new additions are written in blue.

I would also like to use this message to point out a few key changes:

Article 6:

"The team winning the toss or the previous end will have one attempt to throw a valid jack. If this jack is not valid it is handed to the opponent who may place it at any valid position on the designated terrain."
Also Article 6:

"If a player picks up the circle when there are boules still to be played, the circle is replaced but only the opponents are allowed to play their boules."

Tim Edwins

Steve Tait

11/12/2016
Steve passed away on Saturday 3rd December from a heart attack. Ironically, that was the night of the Seal Petanque Club Christmas Dinner. Steve was a leading light of the Club having played, on and off, since his teenage years. Along with his sister Barbara and brother-in-law Dave, they made a strong Triples team, helping to win the 3rd Division in 2015 and runners-up in the 2nd Division in 2016.

Dave and Steve had a big hand in bringing Dave’s grandson, George (14) who is in the running for the Kent Juniors, into the game. Steve’s wife, Miri, also plays regularly for the Club.

Steve had many friends across all the Kent Clubs and I know that he will be sadly missed by all of us.

Steve’s funeral will be held at Tunbridge Wells Crematorium at 10.00am on Tuesday 20th December and all who knew him are welcome to attend and afterwards the family would like you to join them at The White Rock Inn, Underriver – the home of Seal Petanque Club. No flowers please but donations to the British Heart Foundation or to the KPA to fund Junior development would be welcomed. Please bring your Boules as, weather permitting we will play some impromptu Petanque in Steve’s memory!

Howard Sandom, Chairman, Seal PC

John Middleton

18/06/2016
It is with very deep regret that we report the death on May 21st of John Middleton, a champion of Pétanque in Kent and former secretary of the KPA (2010 and 2011) and KPL (2000-2008).

Barbara Middleton writes:

John moved to Sidcup in Kent with his job, in 1977 from Aberdeen Scotland, where he worked for Commercial Union, as the General Secretary for the Staff Association, and remained with them until his Retirement, in August 2000, after 40years service.
He took up the game of Petanque in 1998, after the death of his 1st Wife, and met myself Barbara, playing Petanque.
He was very passionate about the game of Petanque, and played in competions and travelled every year for the last 14 years to the Island of Jersey, and Guernsey, and also Dunkirk in France and made lots of friends.
He qualified to play for kent on 4 occasions and felt very proud of himself at the age of 69 when he got his first cap for KENT.
He twice Managed a squad in the Inter-Regional competition for example the winning 2005 squad.
