Are you playing in, or supporting, the Nord Maritime? Or looking for an opportunity to meet up with petanque friends from around the country? Why not head to Dartford Football club and join those who are involved with this year’s Home Nations Competition.
After a hard day’s play there will be a chance to socialise with a buffet and dancing during the evening in the function room of Princes Park stadium. Music will be provided by both disco and the great band, Jutes, who I am sure many of you will remember from this year’s Detling Classic.
Tickets are £10 each – advance sales are open now, contact Martin Eggleton, Annette Eggleton or Trevor Glenn if you want to reserve your place for this great night.
Thanks
Annette Eggleton

Every year the Kent Petanque Association runs a series of competitions to allow players to qualify to represent the County at the EPA Inter-Regional Competition at Brean Sands, Weston-Super-Mare in September. This year the first is on Monday 5th May at Lordswood Sports and Social Club. If you have played in previous years format changes mean you should read on and if you haven’t joined us before there is some exciting news for those who don’t qualify to play at Brean which might just tempt you out.
Format Change:
This year we will be operating the Swiss System all day, rather than just in the main competition in the afternoon, which means you will play 6 games during the day, with draws taking place between each round to ensure that players with the same number of wins are playing against each other. Among the benefits envisaged by this change are:
Points & Ranking:
When play is finished teams will be ranked by wins and points differences, with ranking points being carried forward between competitions to determine the teams that qualify for Brean Sands, and for this year’s prize fund. As with last year, the Region will be supporting 4 teams with a payment of £150 per team to attend either the Dunkerquoise or the competition at Nismes in Belgium that we went to last year. It will be up to those teams who win to decide which competition they wish to attend to allow maximum flexibility. Those who went last year, I am sure, enjoyed themselves and will be trying hard to be in the top 4 again this year.
Nord Maritime:
This year it is the turn of Dunkerque to come to us, and on Saturday 16th August we will be hosting them at Lordswood Sports and Social Club for a day of friendly - but competitive - play, and a convivial lunch. The Kent squad for this comes from those who have played in the Regional Qualifiers and is generally such a great day it is reason enough to take part.
Chairman’s Cup:
For those who enter one or more of the Regional Qualifiers but who do not go to Brean we are introducing the Chairman’s Cup – a brand new competition to be played on Saturday 13th September at Lordswood Sports and Social Club. This event will be free to enter and will have a top prize of £150, so well worth turning out for. This competition will run alongside the final day of the Kent Junior Petanque Academy, which will include their award presentation, so it will be a great way to support the next generation, too.
So why not come along and try your hand, play against people you may not normally meet and hopefully enjoy a pleasant day’s petanque in the summer sun.

All Juniors & Espoirs that are considering entering the EPA National competitions on the first weekend in April are urged to come along to a special coaching session at Lordswood on Sat 23rd March between 11:00 and 13:00. As this will be held on the terrains that will be used for the EPA Junior Doubles and Triples and the Espoir Triples, this will give all players an added advantage an hopefully help bring these titles to Kent.

The start of another petanque year is nearly upon us and therefore the membership packs are nearly ready to go out.
As there will be a number of clubs represented at the Ab Fab Classic at the Kent County Showground on Sunday I will be taking the paperwork with me there. If anyone is either playing, or in the area, they packs will be available for collection from 10.45 am until 6.30 pm if you would like to collect it - as this will save the County postage costs and guarantee safe delivery.
Any packs not collected will be posted out on Monday.

At present the region has no umpires qualified to officiate at regional or national competitions and we are looking for a number of volunteers to take the umpires’ qualification course early next year. The course is held over two days and the programme is as follows:-
| Day 1 – Training | |
| Umpire’s Code | Rules |
| Conduct of Umpires | How to apply and enforce rules |
| Duties of the Umpire | Measuring |
During day 1 the above topics will be covered in full in the classroom and by practical demonstration and practise.
Day 2 – Examination
1½ hour written exam paper
30 minute oral and practical exam
The course is open to all EPA members who have been members for a minimum of 2 years. Once qualified, umpires will be expected to share umpiring duties at various league and regional events. If you are interested in taking the umpire’s course please let me know. A number of members have registered expressions of interest in the past in taking the course and I would be grateful if these would kindly confirm their interest. If there are sufficient candidates it is hoped that the National Umpire will arrange to hold the course in a suitable location in Kent .
