Compaid Doubles Winners:
The Slashers, (Neil & Colin Phillips, Tovil)
The Crowborough Pétanque club held their annual Compaid Doubles competition on the warmest October day for many years. This was in stark contrast to last year’s competition when we had torrential downpours and the competition had to be abandoned. Fifteen teams from Adur, Croydon, Handcross, Harriers, Lordswood, Tovil and Crowborough entered the contest.
Play started promptly at ten-o-clock with the morning’s play divided into three leagues of five. Several newcomers who had only recently started playing the game had their first experiences of competitive pétanque; although none of them won a game they enjoyed the experience. There were only two teams who won all their games in the morning, two who lost all theirs and just one team was fannied. Lunch was taken at one-o-clock in the warm sunshine with play starting again at two fifteen.
The winners and runners up from the leagues were joined by the next two best of the rest in the Main in the afternoon leaving seven teams to play in the Plate.
In the Main there were some very close games but Should Not Have Come (Andy Williams & Tracey Holt Lordswood) retired after the quarter finals to leave the Splashers a bye into the final. This was a long drawn out affair with each team taking too long between each throw thus the competition dragged on until late in the evening. The Slashers, (Neil & Colin Phillips, Tovil) had their revenge for the humiliating 13-2 defeat in the morning by Star Masters (Scott Ashby & Mic Baxter, Tovil) to beat them 31-12 to win the competition.
The Plate resulted in an easy win by AC/DC Alan & Dawn Constable, Social Club) 13-2 over Croydon (Andrew Randal & Sebastian Siznn). The Competition raised £200.00 for the Compaid Trust bringing the total donation to the Compaid Trust over the years to more than £6000.00 and the total to all charities to £24000.00, which for a small club is quite good.

136 triples teams play in Kent League every week - all 136 could have participated in the Kent League Handicap but this year 18 teams did: a 50% increase on last year and a better than average turnout for a Sunday Competition. Those 18 teams enjoyed a well organised but fun competition without the pressure that many feel at Sunday open competitions.
The competition was played throughout, from the initial leagues to the final, with a handicap: in any game the team in a lower KL division started with as many points as the difference in divisions.
Teams were playing for generous prizes for their clubs: £150 provided by the Kent League for the winners and the entire entry fund given back for the other place awards. With more teams the "plate" competition was larger that the main, so the distribution of prizes reflected this.
The morning play was in 4 leagues - randomly drawn within constraints: that there was an even spread of ability (by KL divisions) across all leagues and teams from the same club were in different leagues wherever possible.
The afternoon play was again in 4 leagues so that everyone played six games. There were 2 parallel leagues in both the Main and Plate competitions.
The results are below. Further detail and photos may follow.
| Winners: | The George | div 1 | Keith, Kevin and Gary Atkinson | £150 |
| Runners Up: | Meadow 1 | div 1 | Kevin and Tracey Spillett and Corinne Cooter | £60 |
| Semi Finalists: | Share & Coulter 2 | div 6 | Bob and Pat Phillpot and Peter West | £30 |
| GRFC Barbarians | div 5 | Mike Cubitt, Penny Matthews and Pete Clarke | £30 | |
| Plate Winners: | Vintage Hartley | div 6 | John Friend, Brian Ferris and Dennis Pearith | £75 |
| Runners Up: | Share & Coulter 1 | div 6 | Alan Martin, Russ Young and Rob Sheridan | £30 |
| Semi Finalists: | Tovil 1 | div 1 | Scott and Dean Ashby and Matt Brown | £20 |
| Tovil 2 | div 1 | Fay and Steve Golder and Neil Philips | £20 |

Playing at Share & Coulter
An excellent turnout of 19 teams from across Kent and farther afield participated in the Share and Coulter Open Doubles on August 21st in excellent weather and good playing conditions.
Lee and Angie Jamieson were the eventual winners, beating the home pairing of Les Taylor and Alan Martin having previously disposed of Rowland Jones and Max Boyce (Meadow PC) in an earlier round. Losing semi-finalists were Mo Milner (Beauty of Bath) and Mike Hoyle (Tovil) and Chris Watkins (Lordswood) and Gary Atkinson (The George).

The second of what is now to be an annual fund raising event, in aid of the Mayor of Gravesham’s Charity, was held in the un-made-up car park in Lord Street last Sunday. Terrains that would have tested the best of players. Teams from Gravesend, Hartley, Croydon, Maidstone, Chislehurst, Ditton, Meopham, Gillingham, Tovil and members of the Kent County junior squad, took part in the all day tournament, organised by Gravesend Rugby Club Pétanque Section. More than sixty players, which included current and past County and International players, making up teams of three, played a series of league games in the morning, with the top twelve going through to gold leagues and the other eight to compete for silver, and total prize money of £216.
Some tight competition in the afternoon resulted in Meadow 1, Kevin Spillett, Greg Davenport, Roland Jones, from Gillingham, getting through to the gold final where they were eventual victors over Shamrocks, Mary, Merle and Mark from Croydon by the odd end in a keenly contested game. Prize money of: £75 for the winners, £42 for the runners-up. In the third/fourth place play off Meadow 3, Dave Turner, Rob Spillett and Doug Dario won by the narrowest of single point victory over HMI, Scott Ashby, Dean Ashby and Simon Thompson, from Tovil. The silver final saw the team of Keith Vines, Sebastian and Sue, Chislehurst overcome Snodland 4, Rita Coomber, Ursular Feltham and Ron Feltham, from Ditton. Prize money of: £42 for the winners and £21 for the runners-up. The day was punctuated by the presence of His Worship the Mayor, Councillor Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, who received instruction on how the game is played before watching many of the games in progress during the afternoon, and getting round to speak with many of the team’s players. He also expressed his thanks to all the players for taking part, along with members of GRFC pétanque for organising the day.
Event director Mike Cubitt said that for the second year the whole event was an enjoyable one, and was now a regular event on the calendar for both the council and Gravesend Rugby Club. With such a large playing area at least double the number of teams could be accommodated in the future and we would hope to be able to attract more teams to take part. A sponsor for future events would be a great help as the main aim was to raise funds for the Mayor’s Charities, and to this end I am pleased to be able to pass over £251.

Winners: "Grousers"
The new season started at Crowborough on 13th March with the Sports Shield Doubles. After rain during the night the terrain was wet but the showers kept away. Teams from Adur, Croydon, Handcross, Hartley, Harriers, Lordswood and The Villagers joined teams from our own club to make fourteen teams in the competition. Play started prompt at ten-o-clock with two leagues of four and two teams of three. During the mornings play only one team won all their games there were no fannies and two teams did not win a game.

Plate Winners: "Handcross Juniors"
Lunch was taken at twelve thirty with a scheduled hours break. Eight teams went into the Main in the afternoon with the remaining six teams playing in the Plate. In the Main it soon became clear two teams were dominate Handcross2 (Derek Offer & Tony Kidd, Handcross) who had not lost a game and Grousers (David & Audrey Halsey, Famous Grousers) who had just scraped into the Main with a one point difference in the league. These two teams met in the final having easily beaten their respective opponents in the quarter and semis. The final was interesting with both teams giving little away and the game could have gone either way with a final score of 13-12 Grousers were the winners. The Plate was also a joy to watch with Handcross Juniors (Peter & Liam Kidd, Handcross) who had not won a game in the mornings play demolishing their opposing teams 13-2,13-4 and 13 -3 to win the Plate.

KL Handicap Winners: "Hartley Shaw" - Mick Nash, Joyce Nash and Jean-Louis Guiot
138 triples teams play in Kent League every week - all 138 could have participated in the Kent League Handicap but disappointingly only 12 teams did, but those 12 teams enjoyed a well organised but fun competition without the pressure that many feel at Sunday open competitions.
The competition was played throughout, from the initial leagues to the final, with a handicap: in any game the team in a lower KL division started with as many points as the difference in divisions; so a division 7 team playing a division 1 team would start their game with 6 points but a division 4 team playing a division 2 team would start their with 2 points.

KL Handicap Runners-up: "Share & Coulter 1" - Alan Martin, Russ Young and Rob Sheridan
Teams were playing for generous prizes for their clubs: £150 provided by the Kent League for the winners and the entire entry fund given back for the other place awards.
The morning play was in 3 leagues of 4 teams - randomly drawn within constraints: that there was an even spread of ability (by KL divisions) across all leagues and teams from the same club were in different leagues wherever possible.
During the morning the handicap points were significant: both Share and Coulter teams (the current division 7 champions) won their respective leagues with identical performances - 3 wins and +12 points.

KL Handicap Plate Winners: "Les Hartley" - Stuart Carr, Babette Carr and Barbara Potter
The afternoon play was again in 3 leagues of 4 teams so that everyone played six games. There were 2 parallel leagues forming the Main Competition and one league forming the Plate. Teams were seeded into the 2 parallel leagues, using the same pattern as for a seeded knockout, by their results gained during the morning.
Strangely that produced one league comprising Share & Coulter 2 and three division 1 teams and even starting each with the maximum possible 6 points, Share & Coulter 2 could only manage to win one game so it was the end of the road for them. That league was won by Hartley Shaw with Meadow 1 as runners up.
In the other league Share & Coulter 1 fared better, winning it against oponents from division 2 and division 4. The runners up were Hartley Crofters who recovered exceptionally, having been fannied in their first game.
The winners of the two leagues played the main final where the matchplay experience, the home advantage (which they would deny) and some outrageous good fortune (which they would not deny) gave Hartley Shaw victory over Share & Coulter 1.
The two teams that came second in the two Main leagues were deemed to be the "semi-finalists" and were awarded the prizes for that level.
The Plate league was won by Les Hartley
| Winners: | Hartley Shaw | Mick Nash, Joyce Nash and Jean-Louis Guiot | £150 |
| Runners Up: | Share & Coulter 1 | Alan Martin, Russ Young and Rob Sheridan | £75 |
| Semi Finalists: | Meadow 1 | Kevin Spillett, Tracey Spillett, Corinne Cooter | £35 |
| Hartley Crofters | Colin Senneck, Ann Senneck and Jean Olley | £35 | |
| Plate Winners: | Les Hartley | Stuart Carr, Babette Carr and Barbara Potter | £35 |
Gold Runners-up Old Spice Girls on left of the Mayor, and Gold winners Ekco Wanderers on the right
The first of what is hoped will be an annual fund raising event, in aid of the Mayor of Gravesham’s Charity, was held in the un-made-up car park in Lord Street last Sunday. Terrains that would have tested the best of players.
Teams from Gravesend, Harley, Whitstable, Herne Bay, Chislehurst, Ditton, Meopham and the local area, took part in the all day tournament, organised by Gravesend Rugby Club Petanque Section.
More than forty players making up teams of three, including novices, played a series of league games in the morning, with the top eight going through to gold leagues and the others to compete for silver, and total prize money of £174.
Some tight competition in the afternoon resulted in Ekco Wanderers, Les Taylor, Pat Taylor, George Birks, from Whitstable, getting through to the gold final where they were eventual victors over Old Spice Girls, Margaret Baxter, Josie Elvin, Jean Olley, from Hartley, by the odd point in a keenly contested game. Prize money of: £60 for the winners, £30 for the runners-up and £15 for the two semi-finalists, Lion Cubs and Ditton Diehards.
The silver final saw the team of Colin Gilmore-Smith, Philip Raisey and Nigel Goddard, from the Sidney Small Arms, Chislehurst come away winners, again by the odd point, against a team from Hartley Country Club, George Angeli, Vanessa Rossall and Chris Cole. Prize money of: £36 for the winners and £18 for the runners-up.
Prize monies were presented to the winners and runners-up by Mayor of Gravesham, Councillor Bill Lambert, who thanked everyone that had taken part, along with Gravesend Rugby Club for organising the day.
Event director Mike Cubitt said that although turnout was disappointing, with a number of teams that had indicated they would be attending, but not there on the day.The whole event was an enjoyable one, and the main aim was to raise funds for the Mayor’s Charities, and to this end I am pleased to be able to pass over £180.

Winners: The Cannons, Michael Little & Dorothy Bickford (Crowborough)
The Crowborough Pétanque held their Bill Reed Memorial Doubles competition on the 25th April. A cloudy early morning soon gave way to some sunshine but rain showers further afield probably kept some competitors away. Sixteen teams from Croydon, Handcross, Hartley, Lordswood, the Crown and Villager joined teams from the home club to play in the event. It was particularly nice to welcome so many new faces to Crowborough. The competition was played to the Swiss format with three games in the morning and two in the afternoon. After the mornings play only two teams had won all their games the BJs, Brennan Sawyer & Justin Ellis (Handcross) with a plus 28 and the Cannons, Michael Little & Dorothy Bickford (Crowborough) with plus 21. Lunch was taken at one-o-clock in warm sunshine, play recommenced at two-o-clock. In the first game after the break the most important match of the afternoon took place, Cannons v BJs, the team that won would most likely win the competition. The Cannons got off to a good start and took their score to 7-4 before the BJs felt their feet, then they steadily caught up to 10 -9 but the Cannons had the luck on their side and won 13-10. This proved decisive the BJs easily won their last game 13-1, whereas the Cannons had a harder game against the BeeGees winning 13-10 to win the competition. Two teams did not win a game but no one was fannied. All the teams enjoyed the day win or lose the company was good and as some players remarked it was a very pleasant way to spend a Sunday.

Mayor of Maidstone Trophy Winners:
Mehdi, Bruce Rowland & Bilal
20 teams attended the Harriers Mayor of Maidstone Triples Competition on Sunday, 11th April 2010 at Tovil Working Men's Club.
The weather was sunny, but a cold wind blew from the north east which didn't let up all day.
Clubs represented were Tovil, Lordswood, Croydon, Whitfield, Herne Bay, Ditton, Vale Tavern, Singleton Barn, The George, Parliament Hill (London), Chiltern Region, Meadow and Harriers.
The main competition was contested by Parliament Hill (Bruce Rowland, Medhi and Bilal) and Vale Wood (Gary Atkinson, Chris Watkins and Alex Bruce). Vale Wood started well, winning the first three ends, but Parliament Hill clawed back the lead for the next seven ends (including 2 dead ends). It then evened out with both teams in the lead alternately, but Parliament Hill eventually won the match and the trophy 13 - 11.
Harriers Mayor of Maidstone Plate Winners:
Martin Edwards, Phil Killick & Andy Pucknell
The Plate final was contested between NAF (Phil Killick, Andy Pucknell and Martin Edwards) and a team from the Chiltern Region & Tovil - Epicureans (Myra Huntley, Adrian Emson and Poppy Whatley). NAF winning 13-7.
Cash prizes were given out to the Winners, Runners Up and losing semi-finalists in the main competition and cash and wine prizes given to the winners and runners up in the Plate.
Thanks to Humphrey White (Tovil PC) and his helpers for an excellent BBQ.

The Winners: Sarah Huntley & Dean Ashby
Following two very damp and dreary days we were fortunate to enjoy a fine day for the Crowborough Pétanque Club’s 2010 Clarion Doubles. Fifteen teams entered from Croydon, Hartley, Harriers, Lordswood, Tovil, Vale, Villagers and Crowborough. They were divided into three leagues of four and one of three with the best two teams from each league going into the main. The morning’s play got under way prompt at ten-o-clock under a cloudy sky but the clouds soon broke up to give way to warm sunshine. There was some fine pointing and shooting during the morning, there were some close games with a team in each league winning all their games, three teams lost all theirs and there was one fanny. The leagues got through their games by one-o-clock with the exception of league three. In this league the four teams fought with tenacity for one point each end to finish 13-12 and 13-11 in their second game. This continued into their last league games also with this league finishing an hour after the other leagues. The afternoon’s play saw two Tovil teams get to the final Tovil Scott Ashby and Mathew Whatley (Tovil) winning 13-6 13-4 to reach the final. Grrrr!! Dean Ashby & Sarah Huntley (Tovil) continuing their fine play of the morning when they only had eleven points scored against them went on to win 13-1.13-2 & 13-5 to win the competition having had only dropped 18points in five games. The plate final saw another Tovil win with Always Late Ben Littley & Neal Phillips beating Frogeyes Pam & Neville Plummer (Harriers) 13-1 the competition finished at four thirty when the trophies were awarded. Everybody agreed it had been a pleasant day.

Winners: Jean-Louis Guiot, Joyce & Mick Nash being presented their rewards by Corinne Cooter
The Rob Cooter Triples competition, that was held at Star Meadow Sports Club on Sunday 14th March, attracted a better than expected turn-out of 40 teams. The competitors, who had travelled from the Midlands, Yorkshire, Suffolk, Hertfordshire, Hampshire, West Sussex, Cornwall and London, as well as many locals, were treated to some fine Kentish weather.
The event was held to celebrate the life of Robert Cooter, a bright young talent in the sport, who tragically died in a car accident on Mothers Day last year at the tender age of just 17.
After the morning leagues the teams were separated into three separate knock out events in the afternoon based on their performances in the morning.
In the main competition the team of Sarah Huntley, Scott & Dean Ashby from Tovil, playing under the team name of Cooterful in respect of their dear friend lost out in the semi-final to the local Star Meadow team of Tracy Turner, Kevin Spillett and Nic Baxter. In the other semi the Hartley team of Jean-Louis Guiot, Joyce & Mick Nash bettered the fancied team of Rachid Hannach, Sylvan Borsi and Bruno Bove. In a surprisingly one-sided final the Hartley team ran out convincing winners.
Making it a double celebration for the Hartley club Hazel Teale, Mags and Ron Yates won the secondary plate competition beating the Harriers team of Martin Edwards, Andy Pucknall and Michael Gear in the final.
In the consolage final the Suffolk team of Marion Halsey, Phil Boarder and Kevin Moss took the final title of the day beating The George side of Rob Harvey, Sheila and Richard King.
With entry fees, raffle takings and donations the event raised £800 for the Special Baby Care Unit (Little Buds fund) at Darent Valley Hospital.
Corinne, Mark & Jennifer Cooter would like to extend their thanks to all those that took part, donated raffle prizes and contributed to this worthwhile fund.
